8/4/07As we get ready to board our plane for Benin, I realize that I don’t know what to expect once we get to Benin. The video of the Songhai Center gave me a vision of where we are staying. I am in awe of the work they are doing in Benin. I had no idea of how much work they were doing there. After orientation, I was picturing a small facility looking at farming and water practices, no a complex that includes a foundry, aquaculture, and food manufacturing. I am so excited to explore what they offer.
The video also confirmed for me the beauty of
Benin. I can’t wait to see Porto-Novo and the countryside. It looks like very different vegetation than anywhere I’ve been before. My allergies should go crazy! I’m not sure what the country or houses will look like. I kind of picture houses like they show in pictures of the townships in South Africa. Although, I hope that Benin isn’t in that state of poverty. I also think that I will see signs of poverty, but wonder what poverty looks like in Benin. Is poverty as obvious in Benin? Will we recognize it or will it be difficult to see because everything looks so different to us?
